Chemical Pumps
Chemical pumps help us solve the problem of pumping and handling chemicals in a toxic environment. They can work in environments with special media such as acids, alkalis, cosmetic chemicals, oils,…
So what are the unique features of the chemical pump? What types do they have? In this article, Thai Khuong will send you the answer.
Chemical pump
A chemical pump is a device designed to pump, transfer or store chemicals. The pump is made of anti-corrosion materials to withstand abrasive liquids such as oils, fuels, acids, solvents, paints, etc.
It is a unique device specialized in industrial applications and can be designed according to the requirements of a particular application. They are replacing conventional pumps when they cannot function or are resistant to the environment or chemical solvents.
Chemical pump characteristics
Chemical pumps are specially designed and manufactured to ensure that they can handle aggressive and corrosive liquids. Usually, chemical pumps are manufactured from stainless steel or plastic. Still, it is essential to check that the construction material is compatible with the specific chemical composition of the fluid being handled in the system. or not.
For example, some chemical transfer pumps are only required to pump less corrosive liquids such as cosmetic products. However, some chemicals are much more aggressive or hazardous and need to be formulated to stricter criteria.
The equipment is much more durable than pumps used for conventional liquid handling applications. The parts and structure of the pump are mostly made from components with high anti-corrosion and anti-wear, combined from various materials based on the parameters of the chemical to be pumped before being put into the item—specific industrial application.
Industrial chemicals are usually fuels, paints, acids, bases, detergents, solvents, etc. Each type of substance has different characteristics and compositions. Depending on the features of the pumped liquid, which are usually viscous, corrosive, and toxic substances, the general condition to create a standard pump is that the equipment must ensure the following two factors:
-
- Resistant to corrosive effects of many chemicals at different temperatures and conditions
- Do not let chemicals leak into the outside environment during operation
In summary, a chemical pump will have the following characteristics:
-
- Entirely constructed of 316 plastic or stainless steel
- Monolithic, minimizing joints
- High level of chemical resistance
- Anti-corrosion, chemical reaction,…
Chemical pumps
Centrifugal pumps
All centrifugal pumps draw liquid into the impeller, creating a vacuum. This characteristic of the centrifugal pump also makes it susceptible to cavitation, especially with low inlet pressures. A significant drawback of centrifugal pumps is the insufficient suction power and the need for priming to start pumping.
The centrifugal pump line used in chemicals is the plastic-head centrifugal pump line. With the structure from plastic material, the centrifugal pump also participates in chemicals, wastewater, … highly corrosive.
Volumetric pump
Includes all types of pumps that use mechanical force to operate by rotating motion, such as gear pumps, vane pumps, piston pumps. These pumps are more efficient than centrifugal pumps when handling chemicals, high viscosity liquids, and applications where low flow and high-pressure characteristics are expected. In addition, volumetric pumps can also transport liquids with low vapor pressure and flow rates that cause a lot of resistance during pumping.
Diaphragm pumps
These pumps are also positive displacement pumps and move liquid or liquid-gas mixture through a reciprocating diaphragm. They have several advantages over other types of positive displacement pumps. Firstly, they don’t have any abrasive components inside, which significantly reduces maintenance. They also require no lubrication, which eliminates the risk of oil vapor leaks and fluid contamination.
Diaphragm pumps are the most common pumps in chemical and cosmetic environments. With the advantage of having no mechanical seal and pumping differently, the diaphragm pump is the most typical chemical pump.
Metering pump
This is a small volumetric pump. They are designed to control and pump fluid flow with extreme precision. The pump uses an electric motor or gas drive system to operate. It works by sucking in a quantity of liquid that the device has measured, passing the fluid through the check valve into the pump chamber, then the pump opens the check valve at the discharge port and pushes the liquid away.
The electric panel can automatically control the metering pump or manually controlled flexibly, suitable for many small and medium-sized industrial chemical applications today.
Magnetic pump
“Superior” is the most appropriate word for magnetic pumps in today’s global chemical industry. Suppose the centrifugal pump is the dominant pump line in this industry. The most prominent and most used are magnetic pump devices. This is the only centrifugal pump designed specifically for chemical pumping. With structural features from the suction head to the pump, the internals is made entirely of materials resistant to chemical corrosion. With the sealless design, no leakage. Simple modular structure, easy to install, easy to maintain.
With the same ability to handle, pump a variety of industrial chemicals. Combined with the highly efficient flow performance that a centrifugal pump has. All the above advantages have created a device that genuinely stands out from the rest on the market. In short, this is a pump line that represents all the standards that a chemical pump needs. And so, when it comes to chemical pumps, it is the magnetic pump and vice versa.
Drum pump
A drum pump is a hand-held chemical pump commonly used in chemical plants. Of course, the operator must also be protected with special equipment when using a drum pump to pump chemicals manually.
Drum pumps can pump chemicals, liquids from tanks or tanks with high doses and concentrations of toxic chemicals. This type of hand-held chemical pump is often used to pump acids, bases, oils, greases, gasoline, etc… Pumps are usually made from materials with good corrosion resistance, such as stainless steel, polypropylene (PP) … This portable chemical pump from drums has relatively good durability and the ability to operate continuously in many harsh environmental conditions.
Lobe pump
Pumps with impellers and gears are mounted on the drive shaft, mounted on the gearbox, equipped with bearings and bearings. The device works by rotating the propeller in the chamber, creating a mechanical force to push the liquid away. Lobe pumps are usually constructed of stainless steel material, using silicon carbide mechanical seals, and Viton coated impellers, making the pump very suitable for transporting corrosive liquids such as chemicals, juices with solid particles.
The device is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries because it can handle solids without losing the quality of the pumped product. In addition, the lobe pump also has a very high level of hygiene and safety, suitable for production processes, food and beverage processing,…
How to choose a chemical pump?
Chemical pumps are a unique line of pumps in the general industry. Therefore, there will be many cases of choosing the wrong pump. In the content of this article, Thai Khuong will give some of the most essential criteria. Help you to quickly select a chemical pump line according to the technical requirements of the system.
A few notes like:
What is the pumped medium? Is it strongly acidic? Liquid or thick?
⇒ Solve the problem of choosing pump construction materials, such as plastic pumps or stainless steel 304, 316,…

Chemical pump application
The Oil & Gas industry uses various equipment, including chemical pumps, which are specially designed pumps capable of handling, transferring, and pumping corrosive liquids such as crude oil. Since a conventional pump cannot handle this liquid, a special chemical pump is required to perform the task.
Like other pump lines, chemical pumps also come in different types that can be used for various applications. Pumps can be effectively used to move liquid fuels and other corrosive chemicals at high pressure, regardless of their viscosity. That’s why we see chemical pumps appearing in applications such as:
-
- Pumping solvents to mix paints in the paint industry
- Pumping acid in factories that produce cosmetics, detergents, and laundry
- Pumping solvents to handle scrap metal, plastic,…
- In the plastic and rubber industry,…
