Heavy slurry pumps are specialized equipment used to handle fluids that are difficult to pump under normal conditions, such as slurry, water mixed with sand, and clay… What are the differences between heavy slurry pumps in Vietnam and the rest of the world? Let’s find out!
What Is Heavy Slurry?
Heavy slurry is a mixture of water and various sediments such as soil, sand, gravel, clay, and rock. It commonly appears during excavation activities. The locations where heavy slurry is most frequently encountered include riverbeds, seabeds, foundation pits at construction sites, and particularly in mineral mining tunnels.
Characteristics of Heavy Slurry
Heavy slurry typically has the following characteristics:
- Water-retaining
- Adhesive
- High viscosity
- Contains hard-to-classify solid components
- Difficult to pump
What Is a Heavy Slurry Pump?
Heavy slurry pumps are a category of specialized pumps. With the high demand for mineral extraction and the rapid development of urban and industrial infrastructure today, the use of heavy slurry pumps is growing steadily. As a result, there are now many brands and product lines of heavy slurry pumps available on the market.

The characteristics of these pump lines are:
- Special construction using materials that resist corrosion, abrasion, and the structural breakdown of the pumped fluid.
- The impeller typically features cutting vanes that resist clogging by suspended solids or fibrous materials mixed in heavy slurry.
- The power of heavy slurry pump lines is typically high to very high, enabling them to draw even the most stubborn heavy slurry fluids, facilitating rapid extraction and site clearance.
In general, however, their specific characteristics vary depending on the application.
Let’s explore what distinguishes professional heavy slurry pump equipment from the EU compared to the slurry pumps currently available in Vietnam!
Types of Heavy Slurry Pumps
You are already familiar with the heavy slurry pumps and suction units currently on the market from countries such as Japan and China, or even locally fabricated equipment by Vietnamese craftsmen.
In this article, Thái Khương will provide you with new information and images about these slurry suction machines, giving us a broader overview of specialized equipment from developed countries such as the EU–G7 bloc.

Piston Slurry Pump
The slurry pump serves as the heart of the slurry circulation system. Piston pumps (also known as submersible or power pumps) are widely used in oil and gas well drilling. The advantages of piston reciprocating pumps include the ability to move high-solids-content fluids laden with abrasives, the ability to pump large particles, ease of operation and maintenance, reliability, and the capability to operate across a wide range of pressures and flow rates by changing the diameter of the compression cylinder (pump liner) and piston.
The two types of piston strokes are single-acting and double-acting. A pump with double-acting strokes in two cylinders is called a duplex pump. A pump with single-acting strokes in three cylinders is called a triplex pump.
Triplex pumps are lighter and more compact than duplex pumps, their output pressure pulses are not greater, and they are less expensive to operate. For these reasons, the majority of new pumps being put into service are triplex designs. Generally, duplex pumps can handle higher flow rates and triplex pumps can deliver higher working pressures. However, for a pump with a fixed horsepower rating, the flow rate and working pressure can be adjusted by changing the size of the liners inside the pump. Changing the speed of the prime mover can also affect the slurry flow rate within a certain range.
Submersible Centrifugal Pump
This category includes two types: horizontal-axis and vertical-axis. Each type is used depending on the specific situation.
However, the more common type is the vertical-axis submersible pump, as its suction configuration delivers better performance.
In this category, Dragflow is a prominent brand with its electric submersible pump lines. These are constructed from heavy-duty materials that withstand both adhesive and abrasive fluids such as heavy slurry.

They are equipped with cutting-type agitator vanes that operate at low rotational speed but with high torque, capable of breaking up the densest slurry masses or solids up to 120mm in size, making them highly suitable for use in mining, river dredging, and port operations.
A notable Dragflow dredging and slurry suction unit worth knowing is the DRP line, which features remote control via a wireless controller. It operates like a miniature vessel, with the heavy slurry pump system mounted on a mobile floating pontoon.
Key technical specifications of the Dragflow DRP slurry suction line include:
- The Dragflow DRP remote-controlled dredger has an operating depth of up to 50m below the surface and can achieve a discharge distance of up to 1km.
- Designed for high solids content (concentrations up to 70% by weight), with power from 110kW and pump capacity of up to 1000m³/h.
- The Dragflow DRP remote-controlled dredger can handle solids up to 90mm, significantly reducing the risk of blockage.
In addition, Dragflow also offers excavator-mounted slurry suction units, used for dredging and slurry extraction at riverbanks, ports, and for clearing canals and drainage channels.
