It is a centrifugal pump that retains fluid in its casing after shutdown, so on restart it evacuates air from the suction line and re-primes without a foot valve or manual priming. It draws from a level below the pump.
Typical self-priming lift is approximately 7–9 m depending on model and conditions (suction line length, temperature, airtightness). Longer suction lines and more entrained gas reduce the actual lift.
