500m3/h Vertical Pump Restoration Process: Addressing Shaft Deformation & Housing Damage

In heavy industrial facilities such as steel mills, a 500m3/h vertical pump is a critical operational asset. When this equipment experiences a serious technical failure, the entire production line can be affected. The Thái Khương Services (TKS) team recently received and resolved a case of severely damaged vertical pump, restoring the equipment to standard operating condition through an in-depth workshop restoration process. Condition Assessment: Severe Technical Damage

Upon receipt at the workshop, the TKS technical team inspected and recorded the complex damage condition of the pump:

  • Pump shut down: The pump shaft was unable to operate.
  • Cascading damage: The entire bearing housing system and mechanical seals were severely damaged.
  • Shaft deformation: The pump shaft was twisted and deformed due to an operational failure.
  • Heavily worn components: Bushings and shaft sleeves were damaged and deformed.

Faced with severe damage, a simple “replacement” solution is not always optimal in terms of cost and lead time. TKS deployed an in-depth workshop restoration process to proactively address the issue.

Step 1: Disassembly and Damage Analysis

The entire pump was disassembled and each component inspected thoroughly to accurately assess the extent of damage and develop a detailed restoration plan.

Step 2: Workshop Machining & Restoration — Cost-Effective Solution

This is a core capability of TKS. Rather than waiting for new spare parts to be imported, our engineers:

  • Remachined the pump shaft: Restored the pump shaft from a twisted, deformed state back to standard tolerances.
  • Restored the bearing housing: Machined and restored the heavily worn bearing housing.
  • Renewed bushings & sleeves: Fully remachined all deformed bushings and shaft sleeves.

Step 3: Mechanical Seal Restoration and Testing

The mechanical seals (a key component) were not only repaired but also subjected to a dedicated pressure test bench. This process ensures 100% seal integrity before assembly, eliminating the risk of leakage during operation.

Step 4: Assembly, Alignment, and Final Finishing

After all components were restored, the TKS team proceeded with complete assembly. This stage demands high precision:

  • Calibration and adjustment of all clearances and technical tolerances.
  • Installation of newly tested and certified mechanical seals.
  • Full cleaning and repainting of the entire pump, returning the equipment to like-new condition.

Operational Recommendations from TKS Engineers

  • Periodically check and monitor bearing temperature, vibration levels, and current draw.
  • Change lubrication oil every 1,000 hours of operation.
  • Re-check shaft alignment after the first 12 hours of operation.
