Screw pumps (screw pump) are positive displacement pumps: rotating screws move sealed cavities along the axis, pushing fluid from inlet to outlet in a continuous, smooth, low-pulsation flow. The pump is self-priming and flow is proportional to rotational speed, making metering convenient.
Classification: progressive cavity (a single helical rotor turning inside an elastomer stator; suited to viscous, solids-laden, shear-sensitive and metering fluids) and multi-screw (2–3 intermeshing screws; suited to oils, fuels, lubricating fluids, high pressure and high flow).
Identify fluid & select type
Viscous, solids-laden, shear-sensitive or metering fluid → progressive cavity (PCP); oil/lubricating fuel, high pressure, high flow → multi-screw. Viscosity and solids content determine configuration.
Calculate flow rate, pressure & stages
Flow rate (m³/h) and pressure (bar) determine pump size and number of stages — multi-stage PCP achieves higher pressure. Lower rotational speed reduces wear when the fluid contains solids.
Select material & brand
Rotor material (coated steel/stainless) and stator (NBR/EPDM/FKM elastomer) selected for chemical compatibility and temperature. Select Nova Rotors (Italy) based on standards and CO-CQ requirements; TKT engineers advise on configuration.
Progressive Cavity (PCP) or Multi-Screw?
The two screw pump types address different applications. Compare by fluid type, pressure and purpose to select.
| Criteria | Progressive Cavity (PCP) | Multi-Screw |
|---|---|---|
| Viscous & shear-sensitive fluid | Suitable (smooth flow) | Suitable |
| Solids-laden fluid | Suitable | Limited |
| Oil, lubricating fuel | Acceptable | Well-suited |
| Pressure | Up to ~48 bar (multi-stage) | Up to ~80 bar |
| High flow rate | Moderate | High |
| Speed-proportional metering | Suitable | Limited |
| Maintenance | Rotor/stator replacement | Durable, low maintenance |

Questions frequently asked
A screw pump is a positive displacement pump using one or more rotating screws to push fluid along the axis, producing a continuous and smooth, low-pulsation flow. The pump is self-priming and flow is proportional to speed, making metering straightforward.
A progressive cavity pump has a single helical rotor turning inside an elastomer stator — suited to viscous, solids-laden, shear-sensitive and metering fluids. A multi-screw pump has 2–3 intermeshing screws — suited to oils, lubricating fuels, high pressure and high flow.
Yes. This is a key advantage of screw pumps: the progressive cavity type can pump very viscous fluids (up to approximately 1,000,000 cP) and fluids with suspended solids, thanks to sealed cavities moving smoothly and low rotational speed reducing wear.
Yes. Because flow is proportional to rotational speed, progressive cavity pumps provide stable, repeatable metering — used for dosing polymers, viscous chemicals and ratio blending.
Typical range: flow rate up to ~500 m³/h, pressure up to ~48 bar in multi-stage configuration (multi-screw types achieve higher pressure). Exact figures depend on the model — see the brand page or contact a TKT engineer.
The rotor is typically hard-coated steel or stainless steel; the stator is an elastomer (NBR, EPDM, FKM) selected for chemical and temperature compatibility. The stator and rotor are wear parts, replaced at intervals based on the fluid and operating hours.
TKT distributes genuine Nova Rotors (Italy) screw pumps — including progressive cavity, twin-screw, metering and macerator lines, with CO-CQ documentation and stator/rotor spare parts. See the brand page or call 0941.400.488.
