For high-viscosity fluids such as molasses, cream, sauce, paste, or thick sludge, the progressive cavity screw pump is a suitable choice because it conveys fluid within sealed cavities that move steadily along the axis, with low shear and low pulsation. The Nova Rotors (Italy) sanitary twin-screw range handles viscosity up to 1,000,000 cps at pressures up to 25 bar, meeting the requirements of thick and structure-sensitive fluids in food, cosmetics, and environmental treatment.

Quick Summary
  • Progressive cavity positive displacement pump: sealed cavities move along the axis, steady flow rate proportional to speed.
  • Low shear preserves the structure of cream, sauce, gel, and honey.
  • Nova Rotors sanitary twin-screw: viscosity up to 1,000,000 cps, pressure up to 25 bar.
  • Handles fluids with solid particles and fibres; self-priming and reversible.
  • Operating note: do not run dry to avoid burning the rubber stator.

Why High-Viscosity Fluids Are Difficult to Pump

01

Characteristics of High-Viscosity Fluids and the Limitations of Conventional Pumps

High-viscosity fluids have high flow resistance, easily generating pressure losses in pipelines and adhering to pipe walls. With centrifugal pumps, increasing viscosity rapidly reduces efficiency and makes it difficult for the impeller to create a stable flow, so centrifugal pumps are mainly suited for thin fluids. Air-operated diaphragm pumps (AODD) can handle thicker fluids but exhibit pulsation due to the diaphragm stroke, causing pressure surges in the pipeline. Many thick media are also shear-sensitive: when agitated strongly, cream can separate, sauce can thin out, and gel can lose its structure.

Therefore, for high-viscosity fluids, a pumping principle is needed that can both generate stable pressure and minimise shear action on the fluid. This is the strength of the progressive cavity screw pump.

Pump Type Capability with High-Viscosity Fluids Flow Characteristics
Centrifugal Limited, suited for thin fluids Continuous, efficiency decreases as viscosity increases
AODD Diaphragm Moderate to fair Pulsating, following the diaphragm stroke
Progressive Cavity High, up to very thick fluids Steady, low pulsation, low shear

Progressive Cavity Working Principle for Thick Fluids

02

Sealed Cavities Move Steadily Along the Axis

The progressive cavity screw pump (also known as a cavity pump) is a single-shaft positive displacement pump. A helical rotor (single start) made of steel rotates eccentrically inside a rubber stator (double start). As the rotor rotates, sealed cavities form between the rotor and stator, moving steadily from the suction end to the discharge end, conveying the fluid in individual “pockets” rather than agitating and pushing it like centrifugal impeller blades.

This mechanism delivers a steady flow rate proportional to rotational speed, with low pulsation and notably low shear — the key factor for preserving the structure of cream, sauce, gel, or emulsions. The pump can also convey fluids with solid particles and fibres, and is self-priming and reversible. The wobble variant (floating stator) simplifies the number of components, making it suitable for viscous fluids with low solids content.

The rotor–stator assembly is a wear part that deteriorates over time. An important operating note: do not allow the pump to run dry, as friction between the rotor and the rubber stator in the absence of fluid lubrication will cause the stator to burn. The stator material is selected according to the fluid, typically NBR, EPDM, or Viton.

Sanitary Twin-Screw for Viscosity up to 1,000,000 cps

When the Fluid Is Too Thick for a Single-Shaft Pump

For media so thick they barely flow under gravity, Nova Rotors offers a sanitary twin-screw range capable of handling very high viscosity up to 1,000,000 cps at pressures up to 25 bar. The two intermeshing screws create a gentle conveying flow with virtually no shear, suitable for thick pastes, concentrated molasses, heavy cream bases, thick sauces, and products that require full structural integrity.

In addition, the Nova Rotors Diamond progressive cavity range serves the majority of industrial high-viscosity fluid requirements with diverse configurations: standard DN-JN for general-purpose applications, hopper-feed DH-JH for thick materials (solids content up to 28%), sanitary DX-JX meeting EHEDG/3A with CIP/SIP for food processing, and vertical-shaft DV for high-viscosity fluids in industrial, chemical, and environmental applications.

Nova Rotors Range Suitable When Key Specifications
Sanitary twin-screw Very thick, shear-sensitive, sanitary media Up to 1,000,000 cps, pressure ≤ 25 bar
Diamond DH-JH (hopper) Thick materials, high solids content Solids content up to 28%
Diamond DX-JX (sanitary) Food processing, CIP/SIP EHEDG/3A compliant
Diamond range (general) General industrial use Up to 420 m³/h, 48 bar

Typical Applications for High-Viscosity Fluids

04

Molasses, Cream, Sauce, Paste, and Thick Sludge

In food and beverage, the progressive cavity screw pump conveys molasses, honey, thick syrups, tomato sauce, mayonnaise, cream, and heavy base mixtures while preserving texture and smoothness. In cosmetics, the pump is suited to gels, moisturising creams, thick shampoos, and emulsions requiring phase stability. In environmental and industrial treatment, the pump handles thick sludge, adhesive slurries, and fluids containing particles and fibres.

When selecting a pump, it is important to clearly define the actual viscosity at the operating temperature, solids content, corrosiveness, and hygiene requirements (sanitary or industrial grade) to choose the correct range and stator material. Accurately establishing these parameters helps the pump run reliably and extends the service life of wear parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high a viscosity can a progressive cavity screw pump handle?

+

The progressive cavity screw pump handles high-viscosity fluids well thanks to the sealed-cavity mechanism. The Nova Rotors sanitary twin-screw range specifically handles very high viscosity up to 1,000,000 cps at pressures up to 25 bar, suitable for molasses, cream, sauce, and thick paste.

Why is low-shear pumping important for cream, sauce, and gel?

+

These media are shear-sensitive: strong agitation can cause phase separation, thinning of the structure, or gel breakdown. The progressive cavity screw pump conveys the fluid within sealed cavities with low shear, thereby preserving the texture and smoothness of the product.

How does the progressive cavity screw pump differ from an AODD diaphragm pump for thick fluids?

+

The AODD diaphragm pump operates on compressed air and pulsates in line with the diaphragm stroke. The progressive cavity screw pump delivers a steadier flow with less pulsation and lower shear, making it more suitable when the fluid structure needs to be preserved and pipeline pulsation needs to be minimised.

Can high-viscosity fluids with solid particles be pumped?

+

Yes. The progressive cavity screw pump can convey fluids containing solid particles and fibres. For thick materials with high solids content, the Nova Rotors Diamond DH-JH hopper variant handles solids content up to 28%.

Why must the pump not be run dry?

+

The rubber stator requires lubrication from the pumped fluid itself. When run dry, friction between the rotor and stator increases rapidly and causes the stator to burn. Therefore, ensure that the pump always has fluid before starting.

What criteria are used to select the stator material?

+

The stator is selected according to the fluid, typically NBR, EPDM, or Viton, based on corrosiveness, temperature, and compatibility requirements. For food and sanitary applications, a range meeting EHEDG/3A with CIP/SIP such as the Diamond DX-JX is recommended.
