Power & Energy Industry
Water is the lifeblood of the power plant. Therefore, the water supply pump system is critical auxiliary equipment and plays a role in controlling the circulation and operating all activities in the power plant—intake pump, circulation pump, condenser pump, oil pump, etc. The operating state of the pump not only affects the safe operation of the power plant but also plays an essential role in the economy. Economy and energy conservation!
The electric power industry includes the processes that generate, transport, distribute and store energy.
According to the characteristics and operating functions of the power plant, the industrial pumping solution divided into three central systems:
-
- Water supply and drainage pump system.
- Cooling pump system.
- Desulfurization pump system.
A pumping system for water supply for thermal power plants
A thermal power plant is an energy plant that uses the principle of converting energy from burning fuels (coal, oil) to heat the water furnace. The heated water turns into high-pressure steam to operate the turbine generates electricity.
For some new generation thermal power plants, we will have several auxiliary industrial pumping systems operating the power plant’s power generation system:
Water supply – return system: Including industrial pump combination systems (centrifugal pump, screw pump, gear pump, and pneumatic diaphragm pump) that support water supply for water tanks, turbine lubrication, radiators heat for the operating system.
Desulfurization system: Use pumps suitable for desulfurization of highly corrosive, highly abrasive chemicals.
Wastewater treatment system: Use pumps capable of handling high fluid particles (liquids, slurries).
Here are some pumping systems in a thermal power plant:
Circulating water pump system
The purpose of the circulating water pump system is to provide cooling water for the steam condenser. Water will be pumped through tubes in the condenser to remove the heat of vaporization from the turbine. The water will then be circulated back to its original position.
The working characteristic of the circulating water pump is low head and large flow. Therefore, centrifugal pump is the most chosen application in small and medium-sized units, the flow rate can reach 10000m/h, and the temperature of the liquid can reach 160°C.
Underneath is a centrifugal pump system that takes care of cooling to the high-temperature steam condenser. Depending on the water source, the appropriate centrifugal pump systems will be selected:
-
- Vertical Centrifugal Pump: Used when taking water from the sea
-
- Horizontal Centrifugal Pump: Used when taking water from a cooling tower
Boiler circulation pump system
Specific applications of industrial pumps for circulating boilers. This pump is needed to protect the furnace’s cooling pipeline. It distributes the water in the boiler cooling tube during operation. The water supply pump system serves to move high pressure and high-temperature liquids to the boiler. This pump is of the single-case type used for the combined cycle of steam generation.
Water supply pump for boiler
The boiler feedwater pump is a device used to supply water from the oxygen tank and high pressure to the boiler. This is considered an essential part of the power plant’s operating system. Because if there is a problem that causes the pump not to work, it will lead to severe accidents that can cause boiler explosion, ..
Therefore, this application requires a pump with very high pressure and reliability, so the multistage centrifugal pump often uses. The overall structure of the pump is typically segmented with flow rates up to 274m/h. The temperature of the liquid can reach 160°C, and the pump body is under 12Mpa pressure at 3600v/min.
Condensation pump
The condenser pump collects dripping water from the hot well of the condenser and pumps it to the degassing heater or back to the boiler feed pump. These pumps operate at external suction pressures.
Therefore, they are usually located at the lowest level of any pump in the power plant. They also install a suction tank situated below ground level.
Furthermore, the velocity of the flow into the condenser piping kept to a minimum. This helps to limit losses due to friction in the pipeline.
A pumping system for water supply for hydroelectric plants
Hydroelectricity is a traditional energy source that uses the physical principle of the potential energy of water stored in large volumes at dams to rotate turbines at high speeds. When the turbines are in motion, electricity generates.
Based on the operation characteristics of the Thai Khuong Pumps hydropower plant, there will be an industrial water supply pump system suitable for the following use functions:
Water supply and drainage pump system
Pumping systems for water supply to hydropower stations are mainly used to supply water such as:
-
- Cooling water turbine generator, water chiller, and water cooling air compressor.
- Lubricate the hydraulic drive turbine.
- Operate the jet pump.
In this system, an electric horizontal centrifugal pump usually uses. The submersible pump provides a raw water inlet, and the submersible pump sucks deep.
Generally, centrifugal pumps will fit all types of power stations. But due to the limitation of suction height and low installation position, as well as the problem of wet and flooded. The solution with deep suction is to use a submersible pump to drain the leak and maintain the drainage system. So the submersible pump is more widely used. However, the cost of submersible pumps will be high, and we need to pay attention to the real problem.
Turbine pump for hydropower plant
With the development of modern electricity, the demand for electricity systems increases. A reversible water pump turbine will combine a pump and a water turbine. The main structure of the water pump wheel design to use as a rotary wheel. Used to improve the flow of active guide leaves.
The motor can run in two ways: As an electric motor or rotate in the opposite direction. A hydraulic turbine drove them as a generator. Centrifugal pumps use to improve the flow. The advantage of the centrifugal pump is its compact size, low investment cost.
Industrial pump system supporting turbines to generate electricity:
-
- Centrifugal pumps and submersible pumps: Water supply – drainage for hydroelectric plants. Currently, some hydropower plants are gradually running out of water in storage tanks. Therefore, some new generation power plants are equipped with a high capacity pump system to serve WATER SUPPORTING the tank.
-
- Pneumatic diaphragm pump: Support lubrication, cooling, cooling turbine system
Pumping systems at power plants operate at optimal and continuous capacity to ensure sufficient power supply to the national grid.

Above are the minimum industrial water supply pump systems in the operation chain of the power plant. Currently, the energy sector in Vietnam focuses on developing with a large scale and high speed to meet the huge demand of people and businesses.
