Centrifugal pump — what is a multi-stage centrifugal pump? It is a centrifugal pump with multiple impeller stages, constructed with several impeller stages arranged at fixed intervals. This multi-stage centrifugal pump is manufactured from cast iron or stainless steel, and operates at elevated temperatures from 40°C and above, giving it an advantage over other pump types.

Construction of Multi-Stage Centrifugal Pumps

In fact, the multi-stage centrifugal pump belongs to the centrifugal pump family, whose construction and working principle we have already covered in a previous article. The key difference lies in the impeller assembly of the pump casing. In a multi-stage centrifugal pump, the impeller assembly has more blades, or the blades are stacked in one or more stages. The purpose is to increase the pump’s power output and efficiency.

These impeller stages are evenly arranged on a common rotating shaft connected to the motor, and are protected by the pump casing, which can be made from various materials such as cast iron, steel, or stainless steel.

The pump has a maximum lift always exceeding 125 metres and is used in applications requiring medium to high head.

Working Principle of Multi-Stage Centrifugal Pumps

During operation, the fluid passes through each impeller stage in sequence; as it moves through successive impellers, pressure progressively increases until the discharge pressure meets the requirements of the application.

This multi-stage pump type relies heavily on the rotational speed of the impellers to generate centrifugal force, which transfers the fluid through the pump.

The number of impeller stages is not fixed; to adjust pressure according to requirements, stages can be added or removed. The first impeller stage is equipped with either a single-suction or double-suction inlet.

Types of Multi-Stage Centrifugal Pumps

To make identification and selection easier, multi-stage centrifugal pumps are divided into two types:

  • Horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pump
  • Vertical multi-stage centrifugal pump

In the sections below, we will analyse the characteristics, features, and advantages and disadvantages of each type to see how they are applied in practice.

Horizontal Multi-Stage Centrifugal Pump

This is a horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pump with multiple impeller stages stacked together to generate strong thrust.

The horizontal pump consists of two main components: the pump head and the pump motor.

  • Pump head: Made from stainless steel, allowing it to handle high-temperature fluids. The pump impellers operate in parallel and in synchronisation.
  • Pump motor: Provides watertight protection through the motor housing and shaft seal. The outer casing of the motor features cooling fins for effective heat dissipation, enabling continuous and stable pump operation.
Horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pump

Advantages of the horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pump

  • High head,
  • High flow rate,
  • Capable of handling hot water.

Compared with other horizontal centrifugal pump types, few models can match its performance, making it one of the most widely used pump types in the market today.

Applications of the horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pump: Used for a wide range of purposes across many industries, including:

  • Boiler feed water supply,
  • Water supply for construction projects,
  • Industrial cooling,…

Vertical Multi-Stage Centrifugal Pump

This is a vertical centrifugal pump with a cylindrical body.

Its construction also includes two main components, the same as the horizontal pump: the pump head and the pump motor.

  • The pump head and motor are connected in a vertical orientation. The pump head contains multiple impeller stages stacked on top of each other, all operating simultaneously; the inlet faces upward and is made from cast iron or stainless steel.
  • The vertical multi-stage centrifugal pump uses centrifugal technology to draw in fluid. Fluid is drawn into the pump head by centrifugal force, flung outward to the pump periphery, and discharged through the discharge port.
Vertical multi-stage centrifugal pump

Advantages of the vertical multi-stage centrifugal pump

Compared with the horizontal type, the vertical pump offers several advantages:

  • More impeller stages
  • Higher power output,
  • Head reaching several hundred metres
  • Significantly higher flow rate

In addition, it can handle hot fluids at elevated temperatures (>200°C). The pump operates stably and continuously with low energy consumption, delivering strong efficiency for users. It can also operate independently or be combined with other pumps to form a pump skid.

Applications of the vertical multi-stage centrifugal pump

  • Domestic water supply for buildings, apartments, hospitals, schools, and households
  • Fire-fighting water supply,…
